Rare 1950s Novelty Figural Purse - Tiki Hut & Native Drummer Scene - Raffia Roof Lid - Hand Painting - Kitsch 50s Summer Resort Hand Bag

$ 450.00

So rare, so fantastic! This 1950s novelty basket purse is actually a tiki hut with a handsome native drummer sitting outside his hand-painted front door. He's carefully painted as well in a pleasantly primitive manner, with a real fur skirt and chenille headband. The tiki hut has a felt grass border, raffia roof lid and a terrific shield to the back. Over all this detail, an arched pair of "banana" leaves creates a very clever handbag handle.

approx 13 1/2 Inches Total Height, Hut is approx 8 1/2 Inches High, Diameter of Base is 6 1/2 Inches Across

None, made by hand, probably for import

Natural woven reeds, tomato red raffia or grass (feels very soft to the touch), bamboo, papier mache man and shield, fur, lightweight wooden base, paints, chenille stems, polished white shell buttons, orange plastic-cased wire, green wool felt, green plastic "leaves" affixed with green florist's tape

Braided raffia loop and polished shell button to either side of the front door

Condition Detail
Very nice overall, raffia roof has streaks of mild fading with a seemingly dusty cast, a few bits of the raffia roof are ruffled/loose, fur of man's skirt is ecru/dingy, very minor clear glue residue around the florist's tape that joins the leaves to the bamboo "tree trunks", all hard to notice and looks barely carried at most

Washing Instructions
Blot with a damp cloth if needed
